Their voices seemed very similar to me, so it was almost as if the story was told by a single protagonist. Everytime I started getting comfortable with where in the story I was, I reached the end of the chapter and it switched between the girls again. Their world was so intricate, with the politics and society’s expectations developed in great detail to paint the world of Demeine as realistically as possible. As for the book, while I struggled a bit with the back and forth between our two protagonists: Emilie and Annette, they stood up as two feminist and powerful voices in YA literature. Eye-catching, and hinting at the beauty and power within the novel, it is easily one of my favorite covers ever. First of all, the cover art is beautiful. Initial Reaction: I went into my local BAM for a single very specific book and ended up adding this to my pile.
